In accordance with Civil Aviation Rules, Part 71, the Civil Aviation Authority formally reviews airspace designation and classification on a regular basis. Under Civil Aviation Rule 71.11 Review of designated and classified airspace, the review must be undertaken at least every 5 years, to review each current airspace designation and classification to verify the continuing need for the airspace designation or classification.
When a review is undertaken an appropriate level of consultation with industry and affected stakeholders is undertaken.
The CAA is undertaking a full review of New Zealand airspace in accordance with Part 71, to be carried out from 2015 to 2018.

Due to circumstances, Airways has delayed the implementation of PBN procedures for this airspace until November 2018.
Therefore, the 2017 East Coast airspace review – Gisborne and Hawke's Bay has been put on hold until 2018.
Most of the submissions received during the initial consultation period involved portions of controlled airspace. Without the final designs of the controlled airspace changes, it is not possible to action these requests. The submissions received will now be considered as part of the review when it is re-activated at the end of 2017.
A summary of the submissions received will be published in early 2017
